Eligibility criteria

Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks (ITN) criteria for eligibility must be respected.

Early stage researchers (ESRs) 

ESRs are in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their research careers, starting at the date of obtaining their masters degree (or similar).

Mobility

All nationalities can apply, but you can only apply to a project which is hosted in a country in which you did not reside or carry your main activity (such as work or study) for more than 12 months within the last 3 years. This excludes short stays such as holidays or compulsory national service.

Mobility Example 1: A German researcher has moved to the Netherlands and has carried out research there for the last six months, prior to that they had always studied or worked in Germany.  The researcher can be appointed to a host institution in the Netherlands, or to any other host institution that is outside of Germany.

Mobility Example 2: A French applicant has worked for the 11 months prior to the recruitment date in France.  Before that period he had been working in Spain for 4 years. The applicant is eligible to be appointed to a host institution in France, or to any other host institution that is outside of Spain.

Employment conditions

The successful candidate will be employed for a maximum period of three years full-time equivalent and receives a generous financial package plus an additional mobility and family allowance according to the rules for Early Stage Researchers (ESRs) in an EU Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions Innovative Training Networks (ITN)

A career development plan will be prepared for each fellow in accordance with his/her supervisor and co-supervisors and will include training, planned secondments and outreach activities in partner institutions of the network. The ESR fellows are supposed to complete their PhD thesis by the end of the 3rd year of their employment.

ESRs Key Responsibilities:

  • To manage and carry out their research projects within 36 months
  • To write a PhD dissertation
  • To participate in research and training activities within the RHUMBO network
  • To write articles for scientific peer reviews
  • To participate in meetings of the different RHUMBO consortium bodies
  • To disseminate their research in the scientific community (international conferences) and non-scientific community, by outreach and public engagement
  • To liaise with the other research staff and students working in broad areas of relevance to the research project and partner institutions.
  • To write progress reports and prepare results for publication and dissemination via journals, presentations and the web.
  • To attend progress and management meetings as required and network with the other research groups.1

Additional Criteria

  • The main language of the project is English, hence all applicants are required to be proficient in both spoken and written forms of the English language.
  • Applicants should consult job advertisements for specific vacancies for further relevant information regarding recruitment criteria. This can be linked to internal demands of host institutions (e.g. required degree of candidates for PhD or post doctoral positions, required level of language skills) and to national legal framework conditions.
  • All ESRs are obliged to participate in the RHUMBO training events held during their employment.
