Project title and related WP(s):

New neurometrics based on the analysis of autonomous nervous system activity (WP2,WP3)

Objectives:

The development of novel metrics derived from the analysis of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity on cardiovascular and respiration control to assess user’s core cognitive processes in mixed reality. ESR6 will be devoted to: 1) Time-varying analysis of heart rate variability (HRV) series as defined in the time and frequency domains, as well as in the complexity/nonlinear domain. Inhomogeneous point-process models for cardiovascular dynamics will be investigated to derive instantaneous correlates of immersive emotional elicitation; 2) Multivariate assessment, including, e.g., cardio-respiratory synchronization and measures of information transfer between peripheral signals to uncover the underlying ANS dynamics that sustains user’s decision-making and cognitive experience in a immersive virtual/mixed reality scenario and 3) Estimation of sympathetic dynamics as derived from electro-dermal activity and combined HRV analysis.

Expected results: A) Identification of autonomous nervous-system dynamics that sustain specific affective/mental states as elicited through immersive mixed reality; B) Methodology to integrate EEG and ANSrelated data.

Planned secondments: Psychophysiological signal processing techniques; NEUR (TO; M18-M22): Application of neuro-business techniques.

Profile: An engineer with strong interest in biomedical signal processing and neuroscience.
